Toast to the host with the most

With the silly season fast approaching, there's no better time to pop the bubbly (or at least stock up your supplies) and toast to family, good friends and the end of another crazy year!

Now I'm no champagne snob by any means, give me a bottle of Brown Brothers sparkling and I'm happy. However, for that extra special occasion, the limited edition Veuve Clicquot le fridge for $119.99 (bottle included) would make a fabulous kitsch offering to your favourite party host. Created exclusively by French designer Denis Boudard for Veuve Clicquot, the cooler chills your bubbles for up to 2 hours.

Available from Vintage Cellars in Brut or Rose (couldnt figure out how to put the accent on the 'e'... but you know what I mean). Happy 'almost' Holidays!

Make your own: Housewarming gift

A beautiful friend of ours - Tammy, has recently purchased her first home and moves in today! CONGRATULATIONS TAM!

Our Tammy (or 'Old Mate' as we affectionately call one another) is quite the domestic Goddess. Not only can she cook and clean, but she's also known to sew the odd button on... Pop that in your pipe and smoke it all you 'Gen Y haters'!

With this in mind, I decided to make her something that was both useful and a little bit cute - A Sewing kit in a jar!

What you will need:

1. A mason jar
2. A foam ball (the same size as the lid of the jar and cut in half)
3. Material of your choice (I chose hessian and lace)
4. A staple gun
5. Good quality (and super strong) glue
6. The sewing kit : Needles, pins, thread, a tape measure, a thimble, scissors, spare buttons, an unpicker, ribbon and anything else you can fit in there!

How to:

1. Using a knife, cut the foam ball in half and ensure it fits on top of the jar lid.
2. Neatly cover the foam in the material of your choice and staple underneath.
3. Cut another strip of your material and glue around the side of the lid. I also popped a bit of lace around
4. Fill the jar with your sewing kit and decorate as you see fit!

"We hope your new house makes you SEW happy"

We love you Tam x

All for One and One for all!

The thought of donning 2 separate pieces of lycra this Summer scares the bejesus out of me. For some unknown reason, I no longer have the ability to produce a natural tan and therefore undergo the gruelling task of applying self-tanning moisturiser (in my case, just to achieve a slightly yellower shade of white) for days leading up to the 'Leg/Abdomen exposing moment'.

Maybe I'm getting lazier with age, or perhaps just looking for an excuse not to do 100 sit-ups before bed each night, but wearing a one-piece swim suit this Summer would make life so much easier. Less tan to apply, less time to spend applying it, less sit-ups to do and not to mention the convenience- chuck on a maxi skirt and it doubles as a full length top! Yep I'm sold. Bye bye Bikini.

Until next summer.... have you heard the rashy is making a come-back??

Slice of Advice #2 - Dress Codes

Dress Codes: Plural of Dress Code

Noun:
1. A set of rules, usually written and posted, specifying the required manner of dress at a school, office club restaurant, etc.
2. The customary style of dress of a specified group.

Simple right? Then why are so many women getting it so wrong?

It seems these days that young women feel that every occasion calls for a mini dress and the highest of high heels. Don't get me wrong there is absolutely a time and place for this attire (i.e. the dance floor), however this does not translate to shopping centres, baby showers, polo in the park and perhaps most poignantly; the beach. What ever happened to dressing for the occasion and in turn, dressing like a lady? Wearing havianas and a kaftan to the beach is far more appropriate, and more likely to turn heads than trying to wobble your way down a sand dune in a sparkly number with wedge heels.

Dressing for the occasion used to be the done thing - and sadly it is a tradition that appears to be rapidly fading into non-existence. So I urge you, If there is water involved, think nautically; stripes, blue, red, loafers. If there is a picnic wear a summery dress. If you're working in an office lose the leather and denim. If you're going to a wedding think cocktail not nightclub. And my favourite of all, if you're travelling by plane; don a blazer with your jeans and get all Jackie O on their asses by wearing your biggest sunnies, styled hair and a large tote (lose the uggs!).

Do understand, I am an avid bun on top of the head, tracky pant loving, short dress wearing woman - but there is a time and a place...so why not exploit every chance you get to dress for the occasion!

Humble Pie (made with a Kitchen Aid)

I am often guilty of accusing my boyfriend of not listening when I talk, and to be honest I don't entirely blame him... His efforts to pretend he is interested in listening to my rants about wallpaper, birds with broken wings, knick knacks and pink lemonade are commendable to say the least. Whilst we're being honest, I'm not particularly stimulated by his conversations about guitars and baseball either.
So just when I thought I had him all figured out, he goes and throws me the sweetest curve ball of them all: a birthday present in the form of a Kitchen Aid Artisan Mixer (in 'pistachio' no less)! It turns out he does listen....so The Bob: I am sorry! My apology will be served in be form of carrot cake with lemon cream cheese icing... Now time for me to eat some humble pie.

The Attic Cafe - Fremantle

Yesterday, was our lovely Angela's birthday.

Happy Birthday Numpty Face!!

It was a Sunday, the sun was shining, birds were chirping and our tummies were empty... Clearly, we had no other option than to celebrate - Breakfast Style.

Both being lovers of all things Fremantle, we decided on The Attic, on Bannister Road. If you knew nothing about this little cafe and were looking for somewhere to cure your overnight hunger, you'd probably poke your head in the tiny door way and think "Oh they only do coffee - bail".

But, if you're as curious as us (or just as hungry) then you'll wonder "What on earth is up that beautiful old stair case!?".

There's an Attic!! (bet you didn't see that one coming?)... A gorgeous open plan wooden attic awaits, with long rustic tables and comfy couches, perfect for cosy breakfast experiences.

Now onto the food...

Unfortunately our coffee was slightly burnt, but it was strong - and we love strong coffee. It was served with lovely coffee art and prompted both of us to go "Awwwww" when it was popped on our table. They also offer a small variety of fresh juices as well as teas. Tick!

The menu offers a slightly different variety of breakfast food; I decided on the granola, with berry compote and natural yoghurt, while Angie went for The Attic's famous 'baked' eggs. Other options included, a green wrap with eggs, spinach & avocado  and avocado, white cheese & lime on toast. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals but neither of us could finish them! The meals are BIG, which is always a treat. Tick!

The service was friendly and the atmosphere of the cafe was gorgeous. It was loud enough to hold your conversation (without fear of judgement), but quiet enough to chill out over a cup of tea and the Sunday Newspaper. Tick!

To me this cafe is not only a lovely place to visit, but the start of things to come in Fremantle. Lane way cafes and bars are popping up everywhere and it couldn't have come at a better time!

The Annex - Mt Hawthorn

Our beautiful Perth is home to many hidden fashion treasures. More often than not, you will stumble across stunning boutiques, tucked away inconspicuously as if to remain a secret from mainstream society.

Even though I would love to keep this little treasure tucked away in my very own ‘black book of beautiful boutiques’, I feel it is my duty to reveal its location.

Nestled amongst café’s and bars at 145 Scarborough Beach Road in Mount Hawthorn, in what was once an old Chemist building, is The Annex.

Walking into The Annex can only be described as walking into the home of an old friend. Oozing warmth and sophistication with its dark wooden floors, pressed tin wall and classic décor, you almost expect to be greeted with a glass of red wine and seated at chesterfield couch for cheese and biscuits. Beautifully arranged fresh flowers, an old piano, gorgeous knick knacks and homely prints only add to the stunning vibe of this refreshingly unique store.

Once you arrive back down to earth, you can most definitely expect to be greeted with the friendliest of smiles from Carla - The Annex’s lovely owner as well as the most amazing scents drifting from the ‘Astier de Villatte’ scented candles. Displayed beautifully on a rustic wooden table in the centre of the store, these candles are designed to capture in wax, the perfumes of key places around the globe - from Paris to Delhi.

Starting at the very front of the long line of stunning clothing, I worked my way through a variety of sophisticated labels including Jessie Hill, Dahlia, Magdalena Valevska, All That Remains and Manning Cartell. It took every ounce of restraint for me not to take the whole rack into the fitting room, but I managed to somehow stick to the budget I had so unwillingly set for myself and refuse the calls of these beautiful clothes. In saying this, I was pleasantly surprised at the varying prices of these hanging gems.

The Annex also stocks denim from Bleulab and Blank, DITA eyewear, Desmond footwear and leather accessories and rumour has it - they will soon stock Camilla and Marc swim and resort wear.

This beautiful store really has it all in my eyes and is a definite place to visit if you’re looking for something a little different.

"What are YOU looking at!?"

Sometimes - no matter how well you slept, you wake up looking and feeling like this:

This photo was taken this morning, I hadn't brushed my
 teeth yet, don't judge me.

Unfortunately, from the moment I opened my eyes this morning and muttered the words "what are YOU looking at" I knew... today was one of those mornings.

If you find yourself in this predicament - Don't beat yourself up, there's no shame in it. It is impossible to predict and even harder to prevent.

Just follow these 5 simple rules to ensure you revert back to your beautiful self by the time you kiss your Partner/Mum/Dog/Inside plant on the cheek and frolic off to work; birds chirping, flowers swaying and traffic dispersing, just for you.

Rule #1 - Don't speak

Anything you say at this point will be used against you. No matter how quickly you think you can get yourself out of this mood, multiply it by 5. Avoid spoken words like the plague. Unless of course, you enjoy spending the rest of the day grovelling. I didn't think so. Close your mouth.

Rule #2 - Choose music, not T.V

Nobody likes Mel and Koshie. Even on a good day they'll grate you like a lump of vintage cheddar. Pop your favourite music on and in moments you'll start to feel your mood dissolve. Depending on the severity of said mood, a little jig might help too.

Rule #3 - Shower

Let's hope you do this every morning, but on a morning like this - make it a cold one. A cold shower is as good as a slap in the face and we all know that's exactly what the 'Witch Doctor' ordered.

Rule #4 - Keep calm and down a coffee

By now you should be starting to feel a bit more like your old self. It's time.

Make it a strong one, you need it.

The most important part of this rule is to make it yourself. DO NOT have any one do this for you. They will no doubt pour the coffee in on the wrong side of the mug (useless, I tell you) resulting in unexplained howling, in which case your day can be considered a write off.

Rule #5 - Fake it til you make it

If rules number 1 through 4 haven't managed to make a dent in your foul mood, fake it. This is your last resort.

Do your hair, your makeup, pop a pretty frock on and splash on your best smile. Give your victim the obligatory kiss on the cheek and watch as they stare in confusion as you skip out the door to start your fabulous day.

When I say skip, I mean - actually skip... you will be surprised at how good it makes you feel.

Conclusion

If your mood is too far gone and these simple rules may as well have been five annoying children asking you why you look so ugly, go back to bed - nobody wants to see you today you grumpy cow.

Sweet Tooth

Most nights I finish dinner and about 1.25 minutes later can be found hovering around the kitchen looking for something sweet.

Most of the time I'm stuck with boring old ice cream or if I am feeling particularly healthy - a cup of tea. But last night, in a moment of pure desperation, I grabbed the only 'sweet' things I could find - a tin of pineapples, a tin of mandarin segments, light sour cream and marshmallows...

Desperate to satisfy my sweet tooth and prove I wasn't completely insane, I popped the fruit into a bowl, stirred in a few of tablespoons of sour cream and topped it with a handful of marshmallows.

I can't lie, this lovely concoction looked like something that my sisters puppy might produce, but it tasted like a little slice of heaven! The sour cream is just enough to mask the sickly sweetness of the fruit and marshmallows and leaves you with such a yummy dessert!

Sunday Pancakes (pronouced Pun-ee-cuk-as)

This is my take on a the mango pancake recipe in the previously blogged about 'Collected Recipes' book. If I'm luck I get these served in bed with a skinny latte on a lazy Sunday.

Ingredients:
2 eggs1 cup self-raising flour
1 cup milk
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 pinch sea salt
25g butter
vanilla essence (I use HEAPS, I don't think you can have too much vanilla)
3/4 cup of mixed berries2 tbs caster sugar
Whisk the eggs in a mixing bowl, sift and add the flour, milk cinnamon, vanilla and salt. Whisk together. In a large frying pan, heat half the butter until golden then add some batter to the pan. I find it easier to cook one at a time and keep them in the oven on low heat to keep them warm.
In a saucepan warm the berries until simmering softly, and mash with the back of a spoon. Add the sugar and stir until dissolved and the mixture becomes slightly syrupy.

To serve, drizzle the berry compote over the pancakes and eat copious amounts until you feel sick and then sleep some more.

I also like to serve with mashed bananas and fresh mangoes, home made strawberry jam, sugar and lemon, good quality Canadian maple syrup, stewed apples....mmm

Get some pork on your fork

We like to ease into our Crafternoons nice a sloooooowwww. General chit-chat, discussing GRAND ideas and going off on numerous tangents many a times before coming back to the original reason why we got together- to make Christmas crafts. Before any of this crafting could go down last Friday it was absolutely necessary that we filled our little Santa bellies with a scrum-diddly-umptious lunch. On the menu was a yummy 'Pulled Pork' recipe handed down to me by the pretty receptionist who I work with, Kylie, who shares my same obsession for food and attempting new recipes. It is a regular on a Monday morning that we debrief about the meals we cooked or ate over the weekend, with 'ooohs' and 'aaahs' as we re-live the enjoyment it brought to our palates. Get the slow cooker out peeps, this is definitely a recipe your friends will be asking for!

Slow Cooked Pulled Pork with Home-made Apple Chutney

Pulled Pork Ingredients:

2-3kg boneless pork shoulder

2 large onions chopped

1 tbs ground cumin

1 tbs ground coriander

Salt & pepper to taste

1 1/2 cups water

A few (generous) dashes of Worcestershire sauce

1/2 cup Apple Cider vinegar

1 tsp sugar

1 bottle BBQ sauce

1 large onion chopped in rings

Place all ingredients (except BBQ sauce and extra onion) in your slow cooker and turn to the lowest heat setting. Cook overnight for approx. 8-9 hours. On completion remove meat and discard liquid from the slow cooker. Shred meat by gently pulling apart with hands or 2 forks and discard fatty pieces. Return shredded meat to slow cooker (keep on low setting) and add another onion and full bottle of BBQ sauce. Cook for a further 3-4 hours, stirring occasionally so edges don't burn.

Apple Chutney Ingredients:

2 large tart green apples chopped into small even pieces

1/2 cup chopped onion

1/4 cup red wine vinegar

1/4 cup brown sugar

1 tbs grated orange peel

1 tbs grated ginger

1/2 tsp mixed spice

Place all ingredients in a medium saucepan and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer covered for approx. 30-40 mins. Uncover and simmer over low heat for a few minutes to cook off excess liquid. Allow to cool and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.

Pulled Pork & Apple Chutney best served on a piece of fresh crusty bread with a side of coleslaw, potato chips and pink lemonade!

Rachel & Henry Climb a Hill

Dust off your picnic basket, fill it with your favourtie goodies and plenty of vino as something very special is happening this Saturday evening...

The quirk-folksters of Rachel & Henry Climb a Hill are launching their debut album, 'The Little Things' in a vintage fair themed extravaganza at Fremantle Arts Centre this Saturday - the 5th of November!!

Rachel & Henry Climb a Hill formed in 2009, frolicking onto the music scene with their debut EP 'First of a Few' which had indie folk across the state not only singing along, but singing their praises too!

Since those early days the band has developed their own distinctive sound, blending the sweet, delicate vocals of Rachel Gorman with the unique musical backgrounds of Brett Crabtree and Vim Leaf. With two new band members now on board, cellist Jenny May and Rhian Todhunter on bass guitar, this new album will take you on a beautiful journey ranging from acoustic folk to reggae-tinged indie-rock, while incorporating catchy composition and playful lyrics.

And let's face it, who could say no to beautiful music, a beautiful location, fairy floss and popcorn!?
