5 Things I'm loving right now

1. Mad Men {TV series}

What's not to love about this award winning TV series? The era, the fashion, the drama! Oh my! If only I wasn't almost finished the 5th season without having access to the sixth yet!

2. Yves Saint Laurent - Rouge Pur Couture

Colour 01

Angela introduced me to this beauty a couple of weeks ago. It's by far one of the loveliest red lipsticks I've seen and remains flawless no matter how much champagne you drink!

3.  Faux flowers + Crystal

The gorgeous crystal Vera Wang vase we were given for our wedding "swooooooon" and the amazingly lifelike Peonies that fill it, which I bought from Trilogy.

4. Brown Rice Cups

O.M.G. Best snack or filling side to any 'on-the-go' meal! At $2.99 for this little pack, they're not the cheapest way to enjoy brown rice, but boy is it easy! I am currently enjoying them with a tin of Greenseas flavoured tuna (tomato and capsicum of course).

5. My new art work

An unfortunate photo, but here they are in our entry way!

As soon as I saw these pop up on my Etsy feed, I knew I needed them. I don't know a lot about art, but what I do know is that it is subjective. Unfortunately Geordie isn't the biggest fan, but apparently they're growing on him. If you love them as much as I do, you can find them here at only $34 a pop.

What a tart...

Recently, I lost my motivation to bake. This is particularly sad considering our super generous 'BFF couple'  gave us a beautiful Kitchen Aid as a wedding present! So over the weekend, I decided it was time to regain said motivation. And that I did.

I had every intention of making my own pastry and ice cream, but as per usual I got distracted and ran out of time. Oooo! Shiny object!

Alas, here is what I came up with:

Hazelnut tart with red wine poached pears and 'home made' ice cream

Ingredients

Tart base & filling
Sweet shortcrust pastry
125g softened butter
125g sugar
2 beaten eggs
25g plain flour
125g ground hazelnuts
Good quality ice cream (home made if possible!)

Red wine pears
Half a bottle of red wine
125ml red port
250 ml freshly squeezed orange juice
Zest of 2 oranges
Zest of 1 lemon
1 bay leaf
2 tsp coriander seeds
1 sprig of rosemary
1 cinnamon stick
250g sugar
3-4 ripe but firm stewing pears

Method

Start with the red wine pears. Place all ingredients, except the pears, in a large saucepan and slowly bring to the boil. Stir until the sugar has dissolved. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes.

Peel and core the pears but leave the stalks on. Halve the pears length ways and lower into the syrup.

Cover with greaseproof paper and gently poach for 20-30 minutes until the pears are tender. Remove from the syrup and leave to cool. Reduce the poaching liquor until syrupy, then strain and cool.

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees and grease your tart tins. Roll out the pastry if you're clever and have made your own, or use a glass to cut out circles of pastry. Once your tins are lined, chill for 30 minutes (the tarts, not you).

Cream the butter and sugar in a mixer. If using a kitchen aid, use the flat beater on speed 4 until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs on speed 6 until well-blended. Fold in the flour into the creamed mixture on speed 2, then fold in the hazelnuts. Spoon the mixture into the tart tins.

Slice the pears length ways into thin slices, so you can fan them out by gently pushing down on the pears. Push the pears into each tart and bake for 30 to 35 minutes until the mixture has set. Leave to cool on a wire rack and serve lukewarm or at room temperature with ice cream and a drizzle of red wine syrup.

I would love to say that this is  a photo of my finished product, but the tarts were THAT yummy (and we were a little 'pissy pants' when it came time to serve them up) that I forgot to take a photo of them...

X-Tend yourself!

There are some moments in life that you’ll never forget; moments you’re transported straight back to upon the waft of a certain smell or hearing a particular song. For me, laying my eyes on the iconic Arnott’s biscuit tin takes me right back to the age of 9, standing centre stage at the Burswood Theatre.

It was the annual Betty Bentley Dance Academy concert and I had just caused my dance partner and I to ruin our part of our class' Jazz routine, which we'd been practising for months. As I was served a spray of insults from my partner, the tears welled in my eyes and I knew I wouldn't be able to face the class again. So much so, that I didn't even say goodbye to my teacher. The Christmas present I'd bought her; a tin of Arnott's biscuits, proceeded to sit in our pantry for months, serving as a reminder of how terrible I was at dancing.

Stupid biscuits
Back in the present, almost eighteen years after my dancing days were cut short, a friend of mine Sarah, suggested I join her at an X-Tend Barre class. X-Tend Barre is an exercise class which fuses dance, Pilates and sculpting exercises at the ballet barre. After the initial shock and countless images of that stupid biscuit tin wore off, I thought it was about time I got over my fear of dancing and decided to join her.

I've got to admit, I was super nervous and to make matters worse, I had no idea what to wear! Luckily Sarah advised the day before, that normal gym clothes would suffice, saving me the embarrassment of rocking up with a brand new tutu and set of ballet pumps.

The class

The class started like any other gym class, with a cardio warm up. However instead of grapevines and knee repeaters, we were faced with choreography involving classic ballet moves such as demi-plie's, tendu's and releve's. After 5 minutes of this I was a little dishevelled, a little self conscious and most certainly out of breath, but it was starting to sink in.

After the warm up we quickly moved onto working our arms, which involved ballet moves with 1kg dumbbells in each hand. "1kg!?!" I hear you say...Let's just say I couldn't raise my arms into 'fifth position' for the rest of the week!

Finally we made it onto the barre, which quickly became my favourite part of the X-Tend barre class. We pulsed through more tendus, leg lifts, plies, ball squeezes and arabesques until we were giggling like 6 years olds at the sight of our shaky jelly legs.

Most of the exercises are done up on your toes, something I've found quite
difficult to get used to!

Now we all know that no workout is complete without working the abs, so we hit the floor once more and then finished the class with a series of graceful stretches and a big clap for our super fit instructor.

The price

I enjoyed my classes at Perth Pilates Studio, where new members can purchase 1 month unlimited passes for just $89. However, if you wish to attend a single session, you'll pay about $23 per class.

The benefits

This 55-minute full body workout is certainly a new way to look at exercise. Not quite as slow as Pilates, and not requiring as much co-ordination as ballet itself. It has been said that if you commit to 3 or more session per week, it will strengthen, lengthen, and stretch the body from top to bottom with the end result being a long and lean physique… without added bulk. I'm yet to see results, even though I've been attending a couple of times a week (I might add that I feel this has nothing to do with the amount of food I've been enjoying of late).

The verdict

So will I continue? Well, I am almost at the end of my month of unlimited classes and although I have really enjoyed the new challenge, I'm not sure I will.

I am a sucker for a good workout which leaves you drenched with sweat and unable to drive a manual car home. Although I woke up sore after each session, it just didn't seem enough for me. And at $23 per class, you'd want it to!

You'll also be pleased to know that you can still get through the class if you're a terrible dancer. There's also no need for a partner, so if you stuff up just smile politely and make sure you say goodbye to the teacher on your way out.

Moody blues

The LBD ain't what it used to be. Luxurious shades of blue are giving black a run for its money this winter, braving the cold with warmth and guaranteed sophistication. Classic navy teamed with black; or bold Monaco blue (this shade falls halfway between cobalt and navy) teamed with white linen or a pop of colour are winners in my books. You can be sure to see this trend also filtering into the home with accent pieces, walls, tableware and soft furnishings also taking on the dark blue hues.

I NEED this bed head. The blue walls are pretty cool too.
